LEWISBURG
– RiverStage Community Theatre will bring to the stage a 2014 adaptation of the
classic adventure story Treasure Island. 
Performances will be at Greenspace Center, 815 Market Street, Lewisburg
the weekends of October 9-11 and 16-18 with shows on Friday and Saturday
evenings at 7:30pm and Sunday matinees at 2:30pm. Tickets are just $15 for
adults and $8 for students, with general admission seating, and they can be
purchased at the door or at www.riverstagetheatre.org. 

Treasure
Island is based on the popular pirate novel of the
same name, published in 1883 by Robert Louis Stevenson. Modern audiences may
have enjoyed one of several adaptations, including the 1990 film starring
Christian Bale and Charleton Heston and the beloved 1996 Muppet Treasure
Island, starring the late Tim Curry. The 2014 adaptation, written by
acclaimed playwright Bryony Lavery, premiered at the National Theatre in London
and follows the familiar story, with one notable exception. In this adaptation,
Jim is a girl, a choice that honors the long-standing practice of casting a
female performer in the role, and there are also some female pirates and
landlubbers. When young Jim Hawkins finds a treasure map, she and several
members of her community see an opportunity to improve their fortunes. They
hire a ship and a crew and sail off in search of treasure. Yet, adventure is
never easy, and it turns out that among the crew are a band of pirates and
their leader, the charismatic Long John Silver who befriends Jim. Battles,
trickery, and sea shanties ensue.
