Day Six: “Allow Yourself to be Amazed at What God Does”, by Joe Miller
He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD.
Psalm 40:3 (NLT)
There have been those few times in my life where I’ve had to stand back and say, “Wow! God, You really outdid yourself THIS time!” While we shouldn’t be amazed at truly how great God is, sometimes a situation takes place that only He could have orchestrated. It’s then when we’re left to marvel at how God truly is in control of all things.
Take the situation I shared on-air this winter. While sitting with a friend having dinner, his phone rang. The caller – a friend of his from his church who I had never met – shared how his daughter’s family’s house had just burned, leaving them homeless, only a few short weeks before Christmas. Because his son-in-law was recently elected to the school board and their granddaughter also attended school there, they were really hoping to find a place within that same school district to stay while they re-built their house. I told my friend, “I happen to know of a place that fits that description. I wonder if they would want to live there?”.
You see, my mother had passed away only a few months before, and this friend – and many others – had been helping me get her place emptied out and ready for a presumed sale. My friend said that he would give his friend my information when he saw him the next day. That next afternoon, while continuing my efforts to sort through seven decades of my parents’ possessions, a knock came at the door. It was my friend’s friend. He saw my truck in the driveway and decided to stop in. To make a long story short, thanks to the help of many volunteers, this family moved into my family’s homestead roughly 12 days later, just in time to celebrate Christmas in their new, temporary home while they re-built.
God is amazing.
And, it’s during such times that we receive not-so-gentle reminders of that fact.
I was recently reminded of I Chronicles 16:24 which reads, “Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous deeds among all peoples.” I was completely amazed as this little story, in an even smaller town, started spreading – through TV, print and on the internet – ultimately reaching hundreds of thousands of people all over the world.
Gracious Lord, as Brandon Heath sings, ‘Give me your eyes’ – spiritual eyes, to see the great works you are doing in and through the ministry of WGRC. And, may hearts be touched and lives be changed through your mighty power. Amen.
