The Sting of Sacrifice by Courtney Shuster
What do you think of when you hear the word sacrifice? Sacrifice doesn’t just mean giving up something, it means giving up something that will hurt at least a little bit. Every once in a while, God will come along and ask us to make a change in life that requires a sacrifice that stings.
Why does it sting? It stings because we care about whatever it is that God is asking us to give up. Last year God brought me to a stop on my journey with two different roads. Both roads required sacrifice, both roads were God honoring, but I could only walk down one – which meant feeling the sting of sacrifice no matter what. It took months of prayer and internal wrestling to figure out which path was the one to take.
I was ready to let go of what I had been holding onto in order to place my feet on the new path God was leading me to. It hurt, and I cried a lot. It was an exciting change for me with opportunity for many good things my heart had desired for a long time, but I had to give up my involvement in something I truly loved being a part of. It stung, and for the very first time in my walk with God I felt like I knew what sacrifice was.
What I have learned over the last year is that God’s plan is always good, because He is always good. Sacrifice for Him is worth it. The sting of sacrifice has a tendency to pop up over and over again when you’ve given up something that was important to you. But here’s what God has taught me – the sting is less painful when my focus is not on what I’ve given up, but what He is giving to me.
Is God asking you to sacrifice something? My advice to you is look at what He wants to give you – and keep looking at that. Perspective is everything. Don’t be afraid to take the next step, because God will be stepping right next to you. Sacrifice will bring you closer to the God who created you and knows what road is best for you to be on. The sting of sacrifice is nothing compared to that!
Scripture: Proverbs 19:21 Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.
