What is it you go to in times of trials and tribulation? We live in a broken world where things seem to go wrong. Whether that be finances, sickness, death, natural disasters, floods, wildfires, you name it! But you know, we can turn to things that will give us temporary comfort and peace. How long does it last? Maybe a couple minutes, hours, days or months. But once that security has passed, then we are right back to where we started, longing for peace during storms.
In Philippians, Paul wrote “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace that surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7 ESV)
Someone may say ‘what about my needs? I don’t have enough money, food, or clothing’. If we trust in the words Jesus spoke, we can live in the promise that God will supply all our needs. We do not have to be anxious about anything.
In Matthew, people were worried about who was going to supply their needs. Jesus said to them, “Therefore do not be anxious, saying ‘what shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’. For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” (Matthew 6:31-34 ESV).
Next time you are looking for shelter in a storm or are anxious about the future, remember that even in the eye of the storm, Jesus has control and can take that anxiousness away. He will give you peace and comfort. All you must do is pray!
